At least 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
